DIY: Buy it and Change it; Create your Perfection!
Have you ever searched for an item of furniture online or in a store and found exactly what you were looking for, but one detail was...off? A tad too tall, a bit too small, the corners sharp instead of rounded, the wrong color, texture, etc.? Ugh! If only you could change it. Well, most times, you can.
In my situation it was a case of the wrong legs? Needing a set of gray chairs, everything I gravitated towards was either out of stock or over budget. Frustrated, but determined, I decided to make do with the "almost perfect" item on my laptop screen. Found some great chairs on wayfair; perfect texture and shade of gray to coordinate with my other furniture, but the legs were an awful pale pine color, which resembled wood in the photos, but were actually metal (ALWAYS read product reviews before buying online!)
I didn't particularly care that the legs were metal instead of wood as some customers mentioned in their disappointed reviews. Metal was a bonus for me. Smoother application for paint and much more sturdier in terms of quality.
To turn things up a notch on those boring pine legs, as well as help the legs blend with the rest of my decor, the decision to paint them was made. Mind you, it's probably best to figure out if everything works properly or assembles well before you paint anything. If you have to return it, you can send it back in its original condition. However, once you know all the pieces are present and everything fits as it's supposed to, disassemble it, if necessary, and change/paint what you hate.
As with my wall mirror, I whipped out my faithful jar of Martha Stewart Living gold satin finish paint (no longer available, sadly) and got to work.
But first,...a coat of primer to help the slippery, satiny metallic paint adhere to the metal surface.
Followed by two coats of gold paint...
I love these chairs. Not only do they fit the aesthetic I was going for with my decor, but they're way more comfortable than they look. Also, being able to put my own stamp on something just makes it all the more enjoyable to use. Those legs are magnificent! And I'm not just saying that because I painted them. Just seems the way they should have been all along.
Remember, just because you bought it that way, doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Don't be afraid to change it up and turn things into what you need!
