Tropical Style: Palm Print

Summer may be winding down, but when you live in a tropical location like Miami, Florida, summer style lasts a lot longer than most; oftentimes, for the majority of the year. For that reason, I tend to get maximum wear out of my spring/summer wardrobes. What some refer to as "vacation wear" or "cruise wear", I'm able to rock on a daily basis or weekend outings. This is the tropical lifestyle!

For those of you who only look for tropical styles during the spring/summer months or solely to wear on vacay, this post is for you. Just because the weather may be cooling down where you are doesn't mean you no longer have use for summer items. If you're planning to take a trip somewhere warm when it turns cold and want to get your tropical vibe on, check out items in the classic palm/leaf print. This design has emerged as a summer staple and can be found on everything from dresses to sneakers. In this post, I'm going to highlight three of my favorite palm-print items.

Palm/Leaf printed pants:

I fell in love with a pair of palm print skinny jeans by Michael Kors (pictured above) a few seasons back, but they were way out of my budget at over $100. At that time, palm printed pants were expensive everywhere; a niche item. My mission became to find a similar pair for less and, as time went on, it finally happened (window-shopping has its benefits). I purchased a much more vibrant pair from Citi Trends a much for around $13 (pictured below), three summers ago, so they're no longer available, but this style is so prevalent, now, you can find this design of pants at places like shein and booohoo for less than $20. My niece recently purchased a pair from h&m for less than $15.

Not only are these pants festive-looking, but it's a whole mood. You feel like you're on vacay, whether you are or not, when you have them on. I wore them to work once (casual work environment) and my boss, at the time, referred to them as my Palm Beach pants because they look like the sort of thing wealthy ladies who are free to shop and gallivant around town during the day would wear. And that's exactly how I feel when I wear them. Easy breezy and carefree. FUN!

Palm print skirt

Continuing the tropical/Palm Beach theme, I felt this skirt (purchased NEW on Ebay for around $5; no longer available), in a similar print, would be great for spring/summer garden weddings as shown in this picture, below.

But I also found it works just as well dressed down for a casual look.

Palm-print shorts

Admittedly, I'm not the sort of person who wears a lot of printed shorts. I prefer to go solid on bottom and play with patterns on top, but the palm print on a pair of shorts drew me in. Colorful, playful and chill, I couldn't resist. Found these (pictured above) for $5.99 at Fallas last summer. If you're the type of person who loves to wear black, even in the summer, and may be hesitant to play with prints or bold colors, try mixing a bit of tropical style with your black. Still fun, still cool, but much for festive.

My greatest satisfaction with the palm print is that it's no longer a niche item that costs a ton to have in your wardrobe. Prices have come down, considerably, but the look remains as casual-classy as ever. You can be "bougie" on a budget, whether on vacation or a during a grocery store run on the weekend.

Bonus: If you're already knee-deep in boots and sweaters with no plans to visit a tropical locale for vacation, don't forget that lots of summer items are on clearance, right now. Pick up a few pieces on sale and save them for next spring/summer!
