Summer Style Diary: Keeping Cool in Black & White
Updated: May 16, 2021
Summer has officially arrived. It's HOT as Hades nearly everywhere around the world. Canada's last arctic ice shelf broke apart because of global warming just last week. Even in some of the coldest corners of the globe, it's warmer than usual. To combat the heat, it's common knowledge that wearing light colors are in order for the sake of keeping cool outdoors. This is when whites, pale pastels and lighter shades dominate wardrobes.
However, for those who love darker hues (which tend to absorb heat), pairing heat seeking items with softer or lighter tones can provide some relief. My favorite pairing is classic black and white; suitable for all seasons and occasions. How it's worn, though, is key to whether your body bakes in sweltering weather versus looking and feeling like a breath of cool, fresh air. The latter is the goal.
First step is to minimize the black or keep it as lightweight as possible, which brings me to my outfit of the day!
White, ruffled, one-shoulder and cropped blouse with whimsical black polka dots paired with a sporty and lightweight drawstring black skirt. The white stripes down the sides and white drawstring are details, which not only coordinates with the top, but also brings a touch of brightness to the skirt.
The second step is to make sure the items contain details which allow for maximum air flow, like the one-shoulder design and cropped top. The top also has an elasticated hem, which can be raised or lowered for as much modesty and air flow as you prefer. The skirt, although knee-length and moderately high-waisted, is lightweight enough to allow gentle breezes to pass through. If you must go dark, keep it as airy as possible with regard to fabric and detail features.
Below are a variety of scenarios for which this sporty chic outfit could possible work.
Work From Home
This is for a day when you don't have any video-conference calls on your agenda and you want to keep cool and feel cute. No sleeve, no shoes required!!
Weekend Shopping/Brunch with Friends/Family (fancy)
With a cute pair of flats or heels, this makes for an easy, breezy, but put together look. You may want to opt for a a smaller bag, but if you're a vlogger/blogger, you might need something with more space like this ladylike backpack. Your phone, camera, extra batteries and mini-tripod should fit effortlessly.
Weekend Shopping/Brunch with Friends/Family (casual)
A pair of white sneakers not only adds the final sporty touch as well as comfort to this sporty chic ensemble, but contributes extra brightness to the look.
