Fall Style: Soft n' Checkered- #OOTD
Certain patterns are known to be more associated with the masculine side of fashion even though they've been incorporated into ladies' wardrobes for years. In the fashion industry, when these patterns are worn by women, it's considered as women wearing "menswear". Houndstooth (dogs tooth), herringbone and some checkered fabrics typically fall into that category. Women and fashion designers, however, have found ways to soften the harshness of these "masculine" prints to present a more feminine vibe. One of my favorite ways to soften these types of designs is to top off masculine bottoms with a touch of softness on top - whether that be a touch of lace, ruffles or the presence of pearls.
For today's office OOTD, I've paired these high-waisted, wide-leg trousers with a soft blue top that has ruching at the neck area and puffed, elasticated sleeves. The sleeves aren't overly puffed the way we saw take precedence this past Spring/Summer; just subtle enough to be ladylike and professional versus fancy, formal or over-the-top. And although we're at the beginning of Fall, it's still fairly warm here in the South, so the lightweight and fairly thin. crepey fabric is still appropriate. The trousers, too, are lightweight and flowy. They give you the look of Fall, but the breathability of Summer, which is the perfect combination for someone living in a warmer climate, but wanting to be fashionably in season. The hints of soft blue mixed in with the black and brown squares not only brightens things up a tad, but takes these pants out of the heavy, masculine zone.
In keeping with it being Fall, I added a light brown tote/purse and camel colored heels for my
accessories, which highlights the brown in the pattern of the bottoms. Black seemed too harsh and light blue was giving me all the feels of Spring. The brown tones in the accessories are a nice contrast without competing with the outfit itself. The only other accent of blue comes in via the oversized rimmed and blue/violet tinted sunglasses. Shades of this size are usually out of my comfort zone, but I'm warming up to them each time I put on a pair. They remind me of styles from the 70's and 80s, yet don't feel dated at all. Do I see myself wearing them three to five years from now? Probably not. Thankfully, they didn't cost very much and I'm able to experiment without making any expensive mistakes. Everything in this outfit is from SHEIN (except the watch) and links to all items are below.
