Fashion Diary: Denim Style

I have an appreciation for denim in all of its varied colors and styles; shirts, shorts, trousers, skirts, jackets, you name it. Black denim, classic blue, faded, dark rinse, coated or in various colors. I love it all. Skinny, wide-leg, high-waisted, mid-rise, boot cut or Mom jeans. It doesn't matter. Low-rise anything, however, has fallen out of favor as part of my personal style, so that's the one exception to the denim rule in my fashion world.

Pinstripe High-Waisted Jeans

Recently, I purchased three new denim pieces in exchange for letting go of about 10 pairs that either no longer fit, were too low-rise for my liking or I just didn't like anymore. One of the new items consists of a pinstripe pair of high-waisted Mom jeans in a classic blue shade from Nasty Gal. The style is more fitted around the hips and waist, and more relaxed in the leg; tapering slightly at the ankle. I thought these would be great for business casual days at the office. The pinstripe detail conveys a professional approach to denim, for me, at least. I can pair them white a tee and sneakers for a super dressed-down look or add a blazer and heels for a more polished ensemble. In the look, below, I opted for a super casual vibe.

Denim Skirt

For a slightly more dressed up, casual, and put-together outfit, I went with blue and white, again, because that tends to be my go-to when it comes to denim. I feel nothing complements the beauty of blue jeans like a white top, whether it's a basic tee, a crisp white button down or a very feminine, lacy number. With this new skirt from SHEIN, I went for the button-down to keep it simple and not compete with the sailor-like detailing down below. The button-front detail has an air of classiness I wanted to maintain, so I felt keeping it crisp and tailored up top was the way to go for this look. Nautical details on anything will catch my eye. I love it on pants and shorts, so finding it on a denim skirt resulted in an immediate trip into my shopping cart. Hem, just below the knee, gives it a ladylike appeal. In the look, below, I paired it with a pair of silver sandals to coordinate with the buttons, for a crisp, but casual, work outfit. Denim is often associated with toughness, like leather, but I felt very soft and womanly in this skirt. It was a perfect fit.

Mom Jeans

In keeping with the nautical theme, I was drawn to these high-waisted, but slightly baggy, Mom jeans from SHEIN; my first in this "Mom" style. They are also tapered at the ankle, but not as narrow as the pinstriped pair. I got rid of a few pairs of skinny fitted jeans for ones with a looser fit. And I took the rise a little higher than I'm used to. These jeans have zero stretch and were on the rougher side after a wash. But as the day went on, I could feel them softening up. Perhaps, like a pair of new shoes, these jeans will need to be broken in over time for a comfy fit. The front flap/button detail adds more interest than you'd typically find with a pair of jeans and I'm all about those special details. Pairing it with a button down and lightweight tweed-inspired blazer elevates the denim for a business casual look I loved. I almost gave the oversized blazer away because I just couldn't find anything in my wardrobe to go with it and make it work. And then I tossed it on with these jeans and magic happened. The cut of the jacket was perfect for the silhouette of the jeans. Adding green for a pop of color with my accessories really paid off for a sophisticated business casual work outfit. I felt so chic in this ensemble! What do you think?
